Life-Saving Ventilators Are In Short Supply Worldwide

Life-saving ventilators are in short supply worldwide!

2022 Ventilators For some patients with neo-coronary critical illness, mechanically assisted ventilation is the treatment that determines whether they can recover or die.

Throw away about 10% of critically ill patients, combined with the first-line treatment, at least 1/3 of the remaining patients to ventilator-assisted oxygenation. The need for ventilators has exceeded 100,000 units in the short term because it cannot share them.

There is a global shortage of ventilators! Shortage! There is a shortage!

"Every state in the U.S. is buying ventilators, and there is a shortage of domestic inventory, so we have to send people to China, the largest manufacturer of ventilators, to buy them." New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. "New York alone may need 30,000 ventilators, but the state currently has only 6,000."

According to the New York Times, Andreas Wieland, chief executive of the medical company Hamilton Medical based in Switzerland, said, "The reality is that there is not enough equipment." The company is also one of the world's largest manufacturers of ventilators.

As you can see, it is not just New York State facing a shortage of ventilators, but the entire United States. It is known that there are currently about 160,000 ventilators in hospitals in the U.S. In addition, there are 12,700 ventilators in the U.S. in the National Strategic Stockpile, a medical supply reserved by the U.S. federal government to respond to national emergencies. As the epidemic continues to grow, this number may be far from enough, and it is only a matter of time before a shortage occurs.

Some industry speculation, the epidemic continues to develop, mainly in Asia and Europe, several countries have long swept up the global supply of ventilators, and the existing capacity in a state of oversupply, it is challenging to meet the new demand from the United States.

Almost at the same time, British Prime Minister Johnson asked more than 60 domestic manufacturers to replace their equipment and transform the production of specialized medical equipment, including respirators.

Italy, where the epidemic is most profound, has also asked Siare Engineering, the country's largest respirator manufacturer, to increase its monthly production capacity from 160 to 500 respirators.

It is understood that Italy currently has 3,000 ventilators, but this seems far from enough. Reuters reported on Saturday that the number of ventilators in Italy could only meet less than a quarter of the demand.

So Italy purchased 1,000 ventilators and 2 million masks, including epidemic prevention materials, from China.

In addition, according to some respirator manufacturers in Europe and the United States, in the short term, they can not speed up production, and the soaring demand is challenging to be met.

China's horsepower is in full swing to "build" respirators

"All Chinese ventilator manufacturers have reached their capacity limits and are all busy responding to foreign demand," said Wu Chuanpu, director of the supply chain for Chinese medical device e-commerce platform Belden Medical.

According to Wu, these manufacturers have orders that will allow them to run at total capacity until May. Biden Medical still receives about 60 to 70 new orders a day, each seeking hundreds or even thousands of these machines, with most of the orders coming from abroad, he said.

"Unlike medical supplies such as masks and thermometers, which can ramp up quickly, the production of ventilators has a high threshold, making it more difficult to expand production quickly." Wu Chuanpu added.

Even though ventilator expansion is complex, countries still spend a lot of money to accelerate the development or even cross-border manufacturing of ventilators. "For patients with new coronary pneumonia, ventilators are life-saving machines!" A doctor said. "A ventilator, you can extend the treatment time of a patient, especially for pneumonia patients with severe disease."

In this case, it is understandable that car manufacturers are forced to build respirators across borders. Tesla CEO Musk had said on March 19: "If there is a shortage of respirator supply, we (Tesla) can make it." As it turned out, it didn't take long for Musk to purchase 1,255 ventilators from China and has arranged to have them flown to Los Angeles, USA.

As you can see, the short-term transition to ventilators is not easy. The ventilators produced in China are now being rushed to Italy and other countries with severe epidemics overseas. And nearly 1,000 ventilators have been produced and delivered to the international market.

It has several thousand more ventilators being scheduled for emergency production. Anxin Securities said, "In the long run, China's medical equipment companies can further enhance their international influence, which is beneficial to the subsequent promotion of overseas products and channel layout."

Niki Lu (ph), an analyst at Bloomberg Information Research, also pointed out that China can supply at least 14,000 non-invasive ventilators in April, based on manufacturers' supply of ventilators to Wuhan, Hubei in March.

Who are the domestic ventilator manufacturers?

As the global trend of new coronary pneumonia spreads, ventilators with a high production threshold will face an oversupply trend in the short term. And with the gradual slowdown of the epidemic in China, the main supply of domestic ventilator brand manufacturers will shift to foreign markets. In the future, which brands will become the mainstay of the global ventilator market in the short term? Next, let's take a look.
